White House Announces Federal Employee Job Cuts as Funding Gap Nears Third Week

The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, making good on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for letting employees go.

Although the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in court.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have declined to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved soon.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican proposal, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs occurred on the very day that government employees got only a partial paycheck for the end of September but excluding the start of October, since funding expired at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.
