Bolsonaro arrested after being declared a risk of fleeing

The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a government overthrow in September and given more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. His successor was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 national vote.
